ESTHER

Words: Jonna Hunt Photography: Christopher Hunt

We discovered Esther Lennstrand’s voice recently and it left an urge to discover more from this Stockholm-based singer who besides growing up with music, studied percussion instruments. Earlier this year she released Follow me home followed by Wolves and Kvällsgäst.

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME YOU DISCOVERED YOUR VOICE AS A SINGER?

I don’t really have a choice to sound any other way than I do, but I remember the first time I realised I could sing with the vibraphone as my main instrument. I was down in Copenhagen with Teenage Engineering playing at a festival, and was asked to finish one of the shows alone with just my voice and the vibraphone. It was a surreal experience.

WHAT DOES MUSIC MEAN TO YOU?

It’s always been present in my life, as my dad is a musician, but lately it’s begun to grow all the more important.

WHAT MAKES YOU GROW AS A MUSICIAN?

Sunlight, sleep and some nurturing. Maybe love… or lack of it.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Meeting new people. Both in writing music and just generally. I always find a new side to myself when there’s new energy in the room.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? WHAT FEELING TO YOU THINK BEST DESCRIBES IT?

I don’t think that’s really up to me to describe! Other people will obviously feel something different than I will while listening, and I find that much more important and interesting.

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST HOPES GOING FORWARD?

I’m very easily bored so I really just want to be able to do as many different things related to music as I possibly can. Play bigger shows with my own project, play with others, write both for myself and for other artists. I want to have fun.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE FROM ONE OF YOUR SONGS? WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

I like the lines I don’t understand myself. I’ve got one from a song that isn’t out yet. “I rip some beauty in bare thought”

I don’t know what it means but I’m finding out. It gives me a nice feeling.

WHAT ARE YOU RELEASING NEXT?

I have a lot of almost finished music waiting to be released, but right now I’m planning an upcoming EP.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SENSE OF STYLE?

Not very thought out. Not that I don’t like to look good, but I very rarely spend more than 5 minutes picking out clothes. A bit too dressed up for a slow day at home but on the verge of being too dressed down for a nice restaurant.
