Words: Jonna Hunt Photography: Christopher Hunt

Her biggest dream is travelling the world with her music. Sophie Robertson, aka Esther Vallee, is Sweden’s next pop sensation. We caught her standing tall against the ever-changing landscape of Stockholm.

YOUR SONG HARDCORE IS FULL OF EMOTIONS, BOTH HAPPY AND SAD. WHO DO THEY BELONG TO?

They belong to everyone who wants to give a crap about what other people think. Who makes their own path and are willing to find their own way to live their life, away from what they’re expected to do. But still, they try very hard to not let anyone enter their vulnerable heart.

WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO ESTHER VALLEE?

She is a 24-year-old girl from Sweden. She writes music, loves to sing, travel, drink red wine, dance. And fashion. She wants to inspire her fans to be who they are and make them realise how important it is to accept the bad things you go through in life. Every trouble or pain they feel will make them stronger in the end.

WHERE IN THE WORLD DO YOU FEEL FREEST?

When I’m swimming in the ocean.

ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST DREAMS IS TRAVELLING THE WORLD WITH YOUR MUSIC. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS?

Yes definitely, how can I not! It’s like two dreams in one dream. They just fit perfectly together. Hopefully I will be able to travel around the world and make a living from my music. I dream of millions of fans and sold-out tours.

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF MUSIC?

When my dad bought me a piano and I had my first piano lesson.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?

I need to say two. Audrey Hepburn and Dua Lipa.

YOUR STYLE COMPLIMENTS YOUR MUSIC! HOW DO YOU EXPRESS YOURSELF THROUGH FASHION?

Wow, thank you! I take that as a big compliment. I feel it’s really important to me. When I was little I knew exactly what I wanted to wear every day. I worked hard with my low self-esteem back then and I loved so many different styles, so I mixed a lot and experimented to find out who I was. It has helped me to find out who I am today. When I find a perfect outfit it makes me feel confident. Especially on stage. Today I express myself through fashion from the 70s and 90s. I usually end up with classic pieces together with a retro pop, punk touch.

DO YOU HAVE A SPOT OR PLACE THAT YOU ALWAYS RETURN TO REFILL ON ENERGY?

Taking a walk during the night. Or in front of my piano.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LINE IN ONE OF YOUR SONGS SO FAR?

“and all the things we never really talk about”– from Numbers
